Every Student Is a Multiplier.
As a nonprofit technology training institute, our accountability is public. We track every metric that matters — enrollment, completion, employment, income change — and we publish the results.
Six months ago I was repairing phones to get by. Today I'm building software for a company in Nairobi — and training the next cohort on weekends.

Why Not Here? Why Not Us?
Every institution of impact has a moment of honest reckoning - a moment when someone looks at their community and asks: why not here? Why not us? ASAL iLab was born from exactly that question.
Garissa, located in northeastern Kenya, is a city rich in culture, resilience, and human potential. Yet for decades, young people in this region have had to leave home - sometimes leaving the country entirely - to access credible technology education. Parents invested in expensive programs in Nairobi or abroad. Many students dropped out entirely; their potential permanently deferred.
ASAL iLab was founded in March 2023 to change that equation permanently. We are a nonprofit institution - which means every program fee, every partnership, and every grant we receive flows back into student scholarships, curriculum development, and community expansion. We are not building a business; we are building an ecosystem.
Our name, ASAL, reflects our roots. In Somali, the language of the majority of our community, it embodies the idea of origin, foundation - something built to last. And iLab is our declaration of intent: this is a laboratory of innovation, a space where ideas are tested, skills are forged, and careers are launched.
Women in Technology
At ASAL iLab, gender inclusion is not a metric we report reluctantly - it is a mission we pursue aggressively. We maintain a minimum 40% female enrollment target across every program, every cohort. We actively recruit women through community outreach, female-focused scholarship programs, and partnerships with schools, NGOs, and women's community groups across Garissa and the surrounding region.
Because the technology economy cannot afford to leave half its talent on the table. And neither can we.

How We Partner With Industry
As a nonprofit, our responsibility is not to shareholders. It is to our students, our community, and the partners who trust us with their resources.
Subsidized Training for Youth
ASAL iLab actively subsidizes program fees for eligible applicants and fundraises to make programs fully free for students from the most underserved backgrounds. No student is turned away for inability to pay where scholarship support is available.
Women in Technology
We maintain a minimum 40% female enrollment target across all programs. We actively recruit women through community outreach, female-focused scholarship programs, and partnerships with schools, NGOs, and women's community groups.
Digital Literacy & Community Inclusion
Beyond our formal programs, ASAL iLab delivers community digital literacy sessions targeting parents, local business owners, and community leaders who need foundational digital skills to participate in the modern economy.
Local Entrepreneurship
Our graduates are not just job-seekers. Many go on to launch technology businesses, freelance practices, and community services. ASAL iLab provides post-graduation mentorship and introductions to incubators and seed networks.
Environmental Responsibility
ASAL iLab operates sustainably. We minimize paper usage, prioritize energy-efficient lab equipment, and align our operations with principles of environmental responsibility consistent with SDG 13.
Three Barriers. One Solution.
Africa is experiencing the fastest-growing youth population on earth. By 2035, Africa will have more young people entering the workforce than the rest of the world combined. The global technology economy faces a shortage of 85 million skilled workers by 2030. ASAL iLab exists at the intersection of these two realities.
Geographic Inequality
World-class technology training is concentrated in major urban centers, excluding entire regions. ASAL iLab brings it directly to Garissa.
Cost Barriers
Private bootcamps and universities in East Africa charge fees that exclude the majority of youth in smaller cities. We offer subsidized and scholarship-supported programs.
Curriculum Irrelevance
Many programs teach theory-heavy content that does not translate into job-ready skills. Every ASAL iLab hour is spent on skills that appear on employer shortlists.
"ASAL iLab was designed to dismantle all three barriers simultaneously: we are local, we are affordable, and we are relentlessly practical."
Aligned With the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
ASAL iLab's work directly advances six of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This is not a marketing claim - it is a structural commitment built into every program we design and every student we enroll.
Quality Education
We deliver world-class, affordable technology education in one of Kenya's most underserved regions, directly advancing the global goal of inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
Decent Work & Economic Growth
Every ASAL iLab graduate enters or advances within the formal economy as a skilled, employed technology professional. We track employment outcomes for 6 months post-graduation.
Reduced Inequalities
We exist to dismantle the geographic, economic, and social barriers that have excluded Northern Kenya from the global technology economy. Our nonprofit model ensures resources flow to those who need them most.
Gender Equality
We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where all individuals, regardless of gender, have equal opportunities to succeed in the technology sector.
Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure
We are dedicated to fostering innovation and building the technological infrastructure that will drive economic growth and development in Northern Kenya.
Climate Action
We are committed to addressing the impacts of climate change through sustainable practices and innovative solutions in our technology programs.
